Under His Wings: Psalm 91 and the God Who Shelters

Psalm 91 might be the most loved chapter in the Bible for people walking through dark valleys β€” and it is the Scripture behind "Shadow Of The Almighty," one of the first songs listeners find at Epic316Music. It opens with a promise for the one who dwells in the shelter of the Most High and rests in the shadow of the Almighty (Psalm 91:1). Notice: the promise belongs to the one who dwells β€” not the occasional visitor, but the man or woman who makes God their home.

THE SHELTER IS A PERSON, NOT A PLACE

The psalm piles up the names of God β€” Most High, Almighty, the LORD, my God β€” because the refuge is not a location or a feeling. It is God Himself. He is the refuge and the fortress (Psalm 91:2). When trouble comes, you do not run to a doctrine about God; you run to God.

UNDER HIS WINGS

The most tender picture in the psalm: He will cover you, and under His wings you will find refuge (Psalm 91:4). The God who commands angels (Psalm 91:11) also stoops like a mother bird over her young. Strength and tenderness are not opposites in God β€” they meet in Him. Whatever tonight holds β€” a diagnosis, a prodigal, a storm over South Florida or a storm in your own house β€” the wings are bigger than the weather.

THE PROMISE IS NOT A TALISMAN

Psalm 91 is not a lucky charm to recite so nothing bad ever happens. Satan himself tried to use it that way with Jesus in the wilderness, and Jesus refused (Matthew 4). The promise is better than a talisman: it is that nothing β€” no terror by night, no arrow by day, no plague, no fall β€” can separate the believer from the God who shelters him, and that God will be with him in trouble and deliver him (Psalm 91:15). Presence in the fire, not exemption from it. That is a promise you can sing.

And we did sing it. "Shadow Of The Almighty | Psalm 91" is streaming everywhere, and the 42-second Short version is up today on YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook. Dwell in the shelter β€” and pass the song to someone who needs a refuge tonight.

The Romans Road: The Gospel in Five Verses

Every Christian should be able to explain the gospel on one road with five stops. That is the Romans Road β€” a chain of verses from Paul's letter to the Romans that walks a sinner from his problem to God's answer. It is also the road my song "The Romans Road | Salvation From Start To Finish" was built on, verse by verse. Walk it with me.

STOP 1 β€” THE PROBLEM: ROMANS 3:23

All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Not some β€” all. The road does not start with our potential; it starts with our ruin. Until a man sees that he falls short of God's glory, the rest of the gospel will sound like an answer to a question he is not asking.

STOP 2 β€” THE CONSEQUENCE: ROMANS 6:23 (FIRST HALF)

The wages of sin is death. Sin pays a wage, and the wage is death β€” physical death, and worse, separation from God forever. A wage is something earned. This is the verse that makes the next one so sweet, because the verse does not end there.

STOP 3 β€” THE GIFT: ROMANS 6:23 (SECOND HALF) AND ROMANS 5:8

But the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. A gift is not earned β€” it is received. And when did God give it? While we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). God did not wait for us to clean up. The demonstration of His love happened at the cross, in our worst condition, on purpose.

STOP 4 β€” THE RESPONSE: ROMANS 10:9

Confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, and you will be saved. Not "try harder." Not "turn over a new leaf." Confess and believe β€” receive Christ as He is offered.

STOP 5 β€” THE PROMISE: ROMANS 10:13

Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. Everyone. No exceptions clause, no fine print. If you call, He answers.

That is the whole gospel on one road β€” and it is why this song leads the "Start Here" player on this site. Listen to the full song on Spotify, watch the lyrics video on YouTube (@Epic316Music), and share the road with someone who needs to walk it.
