"For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, 'The righteous shall live by faith.'" — Romans 1:17 (ESV)
Martin Luther called this verse the gate of paradise — but first it was his torment. "The righteousness of God" sounded like a verdict hanging over him: a holy God demanding a righteousness no monk's fasting could produce. Then the words opened. The righteousness revealed in the gospel is not only the standard God requires — it is the gift God gives, Christ's own perfect record credited to everyone who believes. Luther later said he felt altogether born again. That is still what this verse does. The righteous shall live — not strive, not earn, not pretend — by faith. Today, faith is not believing harder; it is resting your whole weight on a righteousness that is already finished, already yours in Christ. The gate that terrified a monk became paradise's door. It stands open.
