"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast." — Ephesians 2:8–9 (ESV)

This is the week's whole sermon in two verses. By grace — God's favor toward people who deserved the opposite. Through faith — the empty hand that receives. And then Paul closes every loophole: "this is not your own doing." Not the grace, not even the faith to receive it — gift, all of it, "so that no one may boast." Boasting dies here, and so does despair, because a salvation that never rested on your performance cannot be lost by your performance. The Reformation called it sola gratia — grace alone — and it is still the most restful sentence in the world. Today you bring nothing to your salvation except the sin that made it necessary. God brought everything else. Rest in the gift.
