"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." — Psalm 46:1 (ESV)
Psalm 46 does not begin with the shaking — it begins with the shelter. Before a single mountain moves, God names Himself: refuge and strength, and not a distant one — "a very present help in trouble." Very present: nearer than the trouble, readier than your fear. Luther sang this psalm when everything he loved was threatened, and the church has sung it in plagues, wars, hospital rooms and sleepless nights ever since, because trouble is not hypothetical for God's people — and neither is God's help. So here we stand — not because the ground stopped moving, but because God has not. Stand today the way a man stands inside a fortress: not holding the walls up, but held. Your trouble gets a sentence in this story. God gets the first word.
