"but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." — Romans 5:8
This is the fifth stop's thunderclap in a single verse, and its power is in the timing: while we were still sinners. God did not wait for you to clean up, wise up, or come around. He did not love the person you promised to become; He loved the sinner you actually were — and proved it at the cross, at full price, before you had done one thing to deserve it. Scarcely for a righteous man will one die, Paul says; God demonstrated His love in the death of His Son for the ungodly. So if you are waiting today to feel lovable before you come to God, stop waiting. The evidence of His love is not your progress. It is a finished cross. While we were still sinners — that is when He came. That is who He is.
